The Nebraska Forest Service (NFS), as part of the University of Nebraska, currently manages or collaboratively operates five forested sites in the state. Most recently, the NFS was asked to assume management of Prairie Pines—home to the state’s first conservation easement. Partners from a variety of organizations are increasingly turning to the NFS for its expertise in multiple use forest management.

These properties serve a variety of purposes:

  • Undergraduate and graduate research
  • Hybridized hazlenut trials
  • Applied agroforestry trials
  • Public engagement and workshops
  • Protection of biologically unique landscapes (as identified in the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project)

Due to the integrity of the research and liabilities, all of these facilities and sites are not open to the public without permission.
