Nebraska Forest Service Internships

Overview:
The Nebraska Forest Service (NFS) is offering an exciting internship program for NU students who are passionate about forestry, conservation, and natural resource management. This hands-on experience provides interns with the opportunity to work alongside professionals in the field, gaining valuable skills in forest health, properties management, fire management, urban and rural forestry, environmental public relations, and more.

Internship Details:

  • Location: Various locations across Nebraska
  • Duration: One Semester
  • Compensation: $15 hourly
  • Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students pursuing degrees in forestry, environmental science, natural resource management, or related fields

Program Objectives:

  • Provide interns with practical experience in forestry and conservation
  • Enhance knowledge of forest management practices, wildfire prevention, and tree care
  • Support Nebraska’s forests, grasslands, and urban tree canopies through fieldwork and research
  • Engage in community outreach and education initiatives

Internship Opportunities:
Interns may specialize in one or more of the following areas:

  1. Forest Health & Management – Assist with tree health assessments, pest and disease monitoring, and reforestation projects.
  2. Wildland Fire & Prescribed Burns – Support fire suppression training, fuel reduction, and prescribed burn planning.
  3. Urban & Community Forestry – Work with communities to plant and maintain urban trees, develop tree inventories, and promote green spaces.
  4. Properties Management –  Assist with property maintenance, including trail upkeep, invasive species removal, and habitat restoration
  5. GIS & Data Analysis – Support mapping and data collection for forestry and land management projects.
  6. Rural Forestry – Assist with forest management planning, tree planting, and windbreak assessments
  7. Environmental Communications  – Plan and promote public events, workshops, and community engagement initiatives

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a relevant degree program
  • Strong interest in forestry, conservation, and environmental stewardship
  • Ability to work independently and in team settings
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
