In late February 2025, the Nebraska Forest Service (NFS) played a pivotal role in combating the Custer County Complex Fire, a series of wildfires that scorched approximately 6,000 acres near Broken Bow, Nebraska. The complex encompassed three primary fires: the Eureka Valley Fire, the Lillian Fire, and the East Table Road Fire.

Nebraska Forest Service's Immediate Response

The NFS promptly dispatched several staff members to the affected areas, collaborating closely with local fire departments and emergency management agencies. Their expertise was instrumental in coordinating firefighting strategies and resource allocation.

Aerial Support and Ground Operations

To bolster ground efforts, the NFS deployed multiple aircraft, including helicopters, to conduct water drops and aerial reconnaissance. This aerial support was crucial in accessing challenging terrains and suppressing active fire fronts. A notable moment captured during the operations was a helicopter executing a precise water drop over the Eureka Valley Fire, underscoring the coordinated efforts of the firefighting teams.

Statewide Collaboration and Support

The severity of the fires prompted Governor Jim Pillen to declare a state of emergency for Custer and Dawes Counties, enabling the mobilization of additional resources and support. Fire departments from across Nebraska, including the Beatrice Rural Fire Department, sent personnel and equipment to assist in the firefighting efforts. This collective response highlighted the state's solidarity and readiness to address large-scale emergencies.

Community Engagement and Safety Measures

The NFS, alongside local authorities, consistently updated the public on fire conditions and safety protocols. Residents were advised to exercise caution, especially given the extreme fire danger levels during that period. The community's adherence to safety guidelines and support for firefighting personnel played a significant role in the containment efforts.

The Nebraska Forest Service's swift and coordinated response to the Custer County Complex Fire exemplifies its dedication to protecting Nebraska's natural landscapes and communities. Through aerial interventions, ground support, and collaboration with statewide agencies, the NFS showcased its capability to manage and mitigate wildfire threats effectively.
